La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents our 14th annual juried group exhibition, “Everything But the Kitsch ‘N Sync”. This gigantic, no-theme show features works from some of the freshest and most relevant artists working today. Over 8,000 commercial illustrators, graphic designers, tattooists, scenics, students, animators and working gallery artists submitted their work for consideration, and after weeks of deliberation we narrowed it down to 123 artists showcasing just over 225 pieces. The show includes artists we’ve previously exhibited (who consistently produce some of the most interesting paintings and sculptures in pop contemporary), as well as a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered, underground talent.

“Everything but the Kitschen Sync” began in October 1986 as the “Día de los Muertos” show which was entirely focused on the folk art, sculptures and imagery of Mexico’s “Day of the Dead” celebration. By 1995, gallery owner and curator Billy Shire felt the show had run its course and presented other themed group exhibitions such as the 1996 “21st Century Tiki Show” curated with Otto Von Stroheim. In 1998 Shire decided to present a non-themed show dedicated to illustrative and narrative artwork. As many local artists work in commercial graphic art fields such as illustration, cartooning, animation, etc., the show was named “Uncommercial Art by Commercial Artists.” In 2004, Shire changed the show title to the more encompassing and less-cumbersome “Everything but the Kitschen Synch.”

Several spelling variations later, here we are at volume XIV.

“Everyone looks at this show for new and interesting artists,” states Shire, and indeed, not only does La Luz de Jesus pick artists from the Kitschen Sync for future, smaller-group and solo shows – numerous curators and owners of other galleries also keep their eyes on the yearly show for potential artists to add to their rosters. This is the only opportunity for emerging artists to show at the most prestigious gallery in post-pop and it is one of the most anticipated shows of the year because patrons get a crack at buying art from future superstars. Please join La Luz de Jesus as we continue to support the latest and most original efforts from the nation’s alternative art scene.

Biography of Julia Staab:

Amassing a fortune as a major supply contractor for the U.S. Army during the Civil War, Abraham Staab built the beautiful three-story brick mansion for his wife Julia. Constructed in the French Second Empire-style, the residence was decorated with the finest European materials and furnishings.

The large Staab family, including six children, lived primarily on the second floor, which was accessed by a grand staircase. On the third floor was a beautiful ballroom that soon became one of the social entertainment centers of Santa Fe society, as Julia loved to show off the home that she adored.

After the death of her seventh child, a son, soon after birth, Julia fell into a deep depression and her hair was said to have turned prematurely white. Julia had several more unsuccessful pregnancies and eventually took to her room, where she spent almost all of her time until her death at the age of 52 in 1896. Rumors at the time persisted that in Julia’s later years, she had gone completely crazy.

In the 1930s, R.H. and Eulalia Nason became the owners of The Staab House and surrounding estate with plans to turn the property into a hotel. They soon constructed a series of Pueblo Revival-style adobe casitas around the existing Staab Mansion and carriage house. The Nasons called their new business La Posada, Spanish for “resting place.”

In the the following years, the La Posada became a popular place to be for the arts community, drawing many guests who were leaders in the Santa Fe arts movement.

There are numerous reports of Julia Staab’s spirit interfering with hotel employees and guests. One of the first recorded reports in 1979, tells of an employee who was cleaning late in the night and looked up to see a beautifully dressed, translucent woman standing near a fireplace. On another occasion a security guard saw the same woman and was so scared he took off running. A hotel operator reported saw her reposing in an armchair. In all three cases, the spirit vanished shortly after she appeared.

More recent reports include a bartender who states that during a particularly busy evening, glasses suddenly began to fly off the shelves, one by one, crashing to the floor. On this same night, the fireplace kept turning on and off, seemingly of its own accord, and a seasoned waitress continually dropped trays, reporting that it felt as if someone had pushed them up from underneath.

Julia’s alleged spirit has been the subject of many ghost tours, and has been featured in the popular television shows Unsolved Mysteries and Weird Travels.

Social networking backlash

Hello everyone! Today I found myself thinking of something to write, something that has nothing to do with art and everything to do with current trends and behaviors. The one topic that continually fails to escape my thoughts, is the impact of social media and the internet on our personal lives. I started this blog, initially as a personal, unofficial protest against social media’s every expanding influence on our lives.  More importantly I have been wanting to create a more positive channel, so that I could more effectively communicate with my friends and those who follow my art.

Over the years, I have found that social media sites such as facebook, can actually have a negative impact on our daily lives.  The incessant checking of your page, posting new updates, observing other peoples updates, just made me feel like an exasperated dog chasing his own tail. At times,  I have felt like a robotic A.D.D. version of myself, by clicking “like” without any thought to it.  We start the day by checking into our site, looking at our friends news feed etc.  We feel the need to update our sites, so that we do not feel left behind or irrelevant. We all know that person who posts excessive pictures of them eating on a plane, going skiing, yachting or whatever.  You do not have to chronicle every aspect of your day and life. This is not the way it should be, in my opinion. Who really cares what your food looks like?  The whole process can just be exhausting and tiresome.

I have had my facebook since 2005, when it first debuted.  Many people are discovering it every day and are excited by it. I can understand the rush you can get, especially if you have never had a website or any other voice within cyberspace. The luster of the site, has just faded away for me. New users pop up every day, and their updates sometimes make me chuckle or cringe. Some people should not have a facebook page! Why would you let your kid be on facebook? Yes, they may be a dork if they don’t have one, but increasingly facebook is causing kids and adults to have a false reality of themselves.  The minute to hourly posts of meaningless, mind numbing activities, thoughts and rants, actually can make us look like a lower version of ourselves. From my point of view, most of my friends were actually overdoing it. Anything that is done in excess is an addiction. So for me, the novelty has completely worn off. It has just become stale, boring and a place where people sometimes feel like they have to compete to outdo the next person.

All I am saying is, think about how social media affects your life. Step away from time to time and look at your life, and appreciate the little things that you should be grateful for. Everywhere I look, I am finding more and more people who are experiencing this backlash. One day, it will not be so cool to be on sites like facebook. Social media should only be something you do once in awhile, like a glass of wine with a fancy meal etc. This is where I think Twitter has got it right. You have to post your thoughts straight and to the point. So maybe, unplug yourself once in awhile, and examine yourself from the inside out. Don’t let the chatter and static affect your well being.  If you are going to stay on sites, like facebook; try to take a more positive approach.

Sexy Art Gallery Amsterdam

Happy Friday everyone! My thought for the day, advice is to to not let any outside negative force affect your overall mood. When we begin our day, ailment we are like a sponge. Most times, we do not realize how susceptible we are.  Just because some people around you might be angry or unhappy, that does not mean that you have to be as well. Create your own mood.  Those who are negative, despise those who are carefree. Do not let any negative thoughts taint your well being.  If you are grateful for what you have and for the talents that you possess, then positive things will happen.  Be excited for the day, because you never know what will come your way.

On another note, I want to thank Sexy Art Gallery in Amsterdam for inviting me to show my work with them. They have selected works, available for purchase on their website.  This is a wonderful, provocative and classy gallery, that is right in the heart of the famous Red Light District, within the Erotic Museum.  Have a great day everyone and remember the sky is the limit. Send out positive energy and you will get it back in return.
